3 Tips to Getting ‘Lucky’ in Business

It is one of my greatest peeves when a person dilutes someone else’s success by chalking it up to “luck.” Granted, there is something to be said for being in the right place at the right time, but more often than not, I have found that GETTING IN the right place at the right time required a ton of hard work on my part. As I contemplated the “luck” I have had as a Beauty Boss, I realized that most of my so-called “luck” was actually strategic and intentional, which then begs the question, “how DO we create our own luck?”

I’m going to break down three tips that will help you start to create your own luck. To kick it off in the great words of Seneca, “lucky is what happens when preparation meets opportunity,” which epitomizes tip numero-uno!
1. Stay Ready for Anything
BE the person who always over-packs. BE the person who always has a change of nice clothes or cute shoes in the trunk. KEEP your tools sanitized and ready to service a client in one minute’s notice. More than HALF of the amazing opportunities that have come my way from styling LeAnn Rimes hair, to working with Mariah Carey, to filling in for a magazine editorial, have ALL been last minute opportunities that I was PREPARED for. I didn’t have any heads-up that these opportunities would come knocking, but I always want to be ready for that “what-if” scenario that inevitably will come knocking on your door one day too.
2. Stay In-Sight & In-Mind
Most people allow themselves to become a one-hit-wonder. You make this AMAZING connection with an AMAZING human who you totally clicked with and they just so happen to roll with your ideal client or your dream squad. You exchange information, and MAYBE you follow up. Most people don’t even make it that far. If this is you, then you’re doing yourself a HUGE disservice. In the words of networking guru Sandra Yancey, “your fortune is in your follow up.” If you want to grow a relationship with someone, don’t wait for them to initiate a conversation, YOU have to GO FOR IT. And don’t stop with an “it was nice to meet you.” Follow-THROUGH is JUST as critical as follow-up because without it, you become out-of-sight/out-of-mind. You have to remind people that you exist by shooting them a random text to let them know they’re on your mind. I like to send my tribe a random “TOY”, which is an acronym for “thinking of you.” Short, sweet, to the point, but keeps you in-sight and in-mind for any opportunity that could have your name on it.
3. Manifest Destiny

This is where I start sounding cray-cray to some people, but here’s the thing…any wildly successful person you will ever meet will tell you that they believe in the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction states that our thoughts and feelings create our reality. I watched an amazing documentary as a young girl called “The Secret” which really dives into this whole way of thinking and it completely changed my life. Focusing on the positive, and daring to dream big without getting caught up in the “how” has helped me to aggressively and unapologetically pursue my wildest dreams. I don’t welcome negative-Nancy’s and critical-Christina’s in my life. And because of this, I only attract those who live their life by the same motto. Surrounding myself with like-minded and positive people has helped me attract the right people who have presented me the right opportunities, over and over again!

I think this is Not only true but Important for so many of us in the beauty industry to understand. This career takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work. Once your hard work pays off and your enjoying the success, others may try to tarnish your happiness due to their own insecurity. This encourages all to not be distracted by fellow negative artist and embrace your own sparkle.

I totally agree Briana- I have been consulting with successful entrepreneurs in my CPA practise for 25 years and none of them have been successful because of luck alone – only through their actions have they become successful !

I really like the 3 you chose to highlight… hard work does prepare you for when the opportunities show up… but you have to put the time in first to be prepared. And then the Law of Attraction is just that – a law! It is even says it in the Bible, so what you put out does come back to you!

I love the laws of attraction take away. It’s so true, and it’s so easy to lose sight on what is most important at times. However, by keeping your thoughts as positive and encouraging as you can, you can only welcome the reciprocate feels in return. It’s so important put yourself around positive energy that also inspires you. I love this!!!
