How to Use Social Media to Elevate Your Business

As we all know, (or at least we should know) social media is the best way to advertise your businesses and services in 2017. Those days of TV ads, newspaper listings and physical flyers are slowly disappearing into the horizon as we move forward into the digital age. As a start-up, a small business or even a giant corporation, having a dominant social media presence can powerfully impact your business in ways that you can’t even imagine. Here are a few reasons you need to take your social media more seriously.

People are judging you:  You can never get a new chance to make a first impression. So you always want to make sure the first piece of content a potential client or customer sees from you is your BEST. Having social media means it’s more difficult to gauge what content someone will come across first. It could be a tweet, an Instagram photo, a blog post, or a Facebook ad. No one really knows. SO the best way to stay ahead of the game is to make sure that everything you put out is of the highest quality and in alignment with your brand. For example, you are a professional makeup artist, but all people see on your Instagram and Facebook are pictures of your dog and your meals. How are people supposed to gauge your skill and book you for a gig, if the image you are putting out does not align with the image of your brand? Always make sure all images are high quality and relevant ! No one will take you seriously as a business if your photos look like they were shot on a 2004 razor flip phone. Do better, sis. Which leads me to my next point…

Separate Personal from Business: You are free to have your own personal Facebook page or Instagram account or whatever you want. DO NOT  have pictures of your adorable kids, or girls night out at the bar on your business account. Save those personal moments for your friends and family to see. If you are a freelancer or entrepreneur, there are positive ways to let your audience get to know you as the face of your brand. In fact, we encourage building a relationship with your following. Just make sure it’s done tastefully.

Give Something of Value: Have you ever seen a social media page where all they do is solicit? That is a quick way to get an “unfollow” and an even quicker way to annoy your consumer instead of intrigue them. Of course you’re supposed to use your platforms to promote your business but it should be a bit more subtle than just straight up asking. Capitalize on your expertise, share valuable and tangible information with your audience for free. Give them so much juicy content so that when it comes down to the buy, your followers a) trust you enough to make the transaction, and b) don’t feel over-sold!
